How did you come to work in jewellery design?
Anton & I have both been classically trained in jewellery design and manufacture, with a 5‑year traditional apprenticeship. Combined, we have almost 40 years of experience handmaking fine jewellery. In recognition of our work, we are both Freeman of The Goldsmiths Company & of the City of London. After getting married in 2017, we founded KATA Jewellery together. Initially working from our studio in The Goldsmiths’ Centre, London, we then expanded in October 2022 to open our first retail shop at 48C St. John’s Road, Tunbridge Wells. I was initially drawn to jewellery making as it combined both the creative and technical aspects of my personality. I loved that not only was I striving to create something that looked beautiful, but each piece of jewellery is in fact a combination of goldsmithing techniques, mathematics, and art.

How would you describe your business?
KATA Jewellery is more than just a jewellery shop’. We are a Fine Jewellery Boutique and Arts Gallery, showcasing our own collection, guest jewellery designers & silversmiths as well as triannual art exhibitions. We specialise in bespoke jewellery, combining modern design with traditional craftsmanship to make unique pieces. We pride ourselves on making future heirlooms’ and use 100% recycled and sustainably sourced gold and platinum in our work. As skilled craftspeople, we also have the ability to carry out all types of jewellery repairs, sizing’s and alterations. A one-stop shop for everything jewellery related.

What do you love most about being a jeweller?
What I love most about being a jeweller is the people that I make these pieces for. That’s what makes it interesting and keeps our designs ever evolving. Every single piece of jewellery is going to be different because every person we create for is an individual. Jewellery is such a personal thing. It is an expression of self, it’s also an expression of love, and of friendship. It is those memorable moments and being part of those moments with people that make the job truly special.

How do you advise your clients when selecting a piece of jewellery?
When choosing a piece of jewellery, I always advise my clients to not be swayed by what is fashionable, but to choose a piece that speaks to them. To follow their instincts and find the jewel that is an expression of their own personal style. That way, the piece of jewellery will be timeless and will not become dated.

Why do your clients choose to have a piece made by you?
The reason why our clients choose Kata comes down to one word, trust. Trust is everything when it comes to choosing your jeweller. You have to trust their skill and knowledge to execute the piece of jewellery with precision and to the highest quality. But also, especially with heirloom remodelling, our clients are trusting us with their precious memories, which are irreplaceable. Word of mouth recommendation is how most of our clients come to us, and they are our best advertisement. When you come highly recommended, that bond of trust is already established.
