Academic Excellence Rooted in Pastoral Care
A word from the Head – Sacred Heart, Wadhurst. What does academic success really look like in an independent primary school?
At Sacred Heart School, Wadhurst, we believe it begins with a child who is happy to come through the school gates each morning; a child who feels known, valued and safe, who has the confidence to make mistakes, take on challenges and discover just how much they are capable of achieving.
Our academic results are something of which we are enormously proud. As a small, non-selective school, our children consistently achieve impressive outcomes. Around 40 – 50% of our Year 6 pupils choose to sit the Kent Test each year and, in our latest published results, the average score among those who passed was an exceptional 392 – 60 points above the pass mark of 332. Our children move on to an impressive range of grammar, independent and maintained secondary schools, while recent leavers have also secured scholarships in Academics, Music, Drama and Sport.
Yet perhaps the most important thing about these achievements is how they are accomplished.
There is no hothousing at Sacred Heart School. Instead, our children benefit from small classes, high expectations and teachers who know them exceptionally well. This enables us to recognise when a child needs additional support, but equally when they are ready to be stretched further. Our 2025 Independent Schools Inspectorate inspection captured this beautifully, noting that “pupils progress rapidly with their learning as they advance through the school” and that lessons stretch pupils to “challenge their thinking and deepen their understanding.”
Academic ambition sits within what inspectors described as an “overall atmosphere of calm, purposeful learning”. We want our pupils to work hard and aim high, but we also want them to retain their curiosity, creativity and love of learning. Success should never come at the expense of childhood.
This is where pastoral care becomes so important.
We know that children learn best when they feel secure, understood and genuinely cared for. Our small-school environment means that children are not simply names on a register. Staff know their personalities, friendships, interests and individual strengths. Inspectors recognised that our leaders “develop nurturing relationships with pupils so that pupils feel valued and connect to the school”, and that recognising every pupil as an individual has a positive impact on their “self-worth, confidence and readiness to learn.”
The evidence from our families and pupils is equally powerful. During our ISI inspection, 100% of pupils surveyed said they were happy at school, while 100% of parents agreed that their child was happy. Every parent surveyed also agreed that Sacred Heart School supports their child’s social and emotional development, and every pupil agreed that the school supports their physical and mental health.
For us, these statistics belong alongside our examination results because they tell an equally important story about educational success.
Rooted in our Catholic ethos and our mission to Love, Learn, Grow and Worship, Sacred Heart School is ambitious for every child – academically, personally and spiritually. We want children to leave us with excellent foundations for the next stage of their education, but also with something less easily measured: kindness, resilience, confidence, compassion and a strong sense of their own worth.
Perhaps that is the real strength of a small school. Children can achieve highly without becoming defined by their achievements.
At Sacred Heart School, we know that when children feel happy, safe and truly known, they are ready to learn. And when they are given the confidence to believe in themselves, they can achieve remarkable things.
