Most would argue one of the most significant statures of Battle and the standalone landmark of the area would be that of the Abbey. Approaching from the south you will feel the awe of the Abbey to the left as you pass into the high street, greeted with an open space to the front when at this time of the year is always hosting the monumental, merry Christmas tree. Travelling in from the North? Well, you will experience much of the same, the imposing gatehouse of the Abbey can be seen as you look down the High Steet, built Circa 1338

Although the Abbey may be a helm of Battle its certainly not the only inspiring thing about the town. At a time when some would say the high street is a dying commodity this cannot be said for such a historic town as Battle. Steeped in history, Georgian buildings. Cottages and buildings dating from around 1700 plus the parish church of St Mary which was built in Norman times and for the most part is 12th century. To the north of the high street you will find the Almonry dating back to 1090 which now houses the Town Council and the Battle Museum of local history.

Finding settlement to more recent times such as today you will find pretty much everything you need in this town for the people. From breakfast cafes, florists, warm welcoming public houses, ice-creams to naughty treats. Hair & Beauty glam treatments, green grocers- even supermarkets and convenience stores there really is no stone unturned in the development of this town which is why it’s so close to the locals’ hearts and top of the visitors lists.

If only King Harold avoided that arrow and could see the place now! Its not hard to see why the town has such a thriving high street and strong sense of local community. You will regularly see the street bollards and post box decorated with knitted hats with fitting themes throughout the year. November time you will find one of the most famous bonfire nights in the southeast . At Christmas you will have an array of activities, the Christmas parade, carol singing and late night shopping plus much more throughout the year. We certainly love Battle!

Here’s just a few places that hold the local spirits high and showcase just what battle business is all about.
