TWODS – The Sound of Music

Few musicals have stood the test of time quite like The Sound of Music. Sixty years after its cinematic debut, the story of Maria and the von Trapp family continues to enchant audiences, and the recent TWODS production brought that enduring magic to life in Tunbridge Wells with heartfelt energy, rich vocals and a genuine sense of joy.

From the moment the curtain rose on the Austrian hills, it was clear this was a show crafted with care and affection. The staging, simple yet evocative, made clever use of lighting and projection to transport the audience from abbey cloisters to alpine meadows. The costumes, too, captured the warmth of the era using soft fabrics and pastoral tones, while the live orchestra, conducted by Musical Director Hatty Philips, filled the theatre with that unmistakable Rodgers and Hammerstein score.

At the heart of the production was a standout performance from Imogen Hart-Smith playing Maria. Her portrayal struck the perfect balance between spirited independence and tenderness, her voice bright and expressive through every note of Do-Re-Mi” and My Favourite Things”. Her chemistry with the children gave the show a heartbeat and together, they brought laughter, innocence and rhythm to scenes that could slipped into nostalgia. Each young performer held their own as well – all so confident, natural and utterly charming.

Simon Kerr-Davis convincingly portrayed Captain von Trapp’s transformation from stoic disciplinarian to devoted father and husband. His rendition of Edelweiss” was a highlight — quietly powerful, full of pride and vulnerability. The nuns of Nonnberg Abbey, led by Lelia Di Domenico as Mother Abbess, also shone in their ensemble pieces, especially during Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, which closed Act One with spine-tingling harmonies that earned a spontaneous ovation.

Technically, the production impressed too. Scene changes were smooth and imaginative, while the choreography, particularly during So Long, Farewell” and the concert sequence, added sparkle without ever overshadowing the vocals. The sound design was crisp, ensuring every lyric reached the back row, and the orchestra’s pacing gave even the most well-known songs a renewed sense of life.

TWODS once again proved why they remain a cornerstone of the local performing arts scene. With strong direction, a dedicated cast, and that unmistakable blend of nostalgia and heart, The Sound of Music was everything it promised to be uplifting, beautifully performed, and a reminder that some stories never lose their song.

Alison Cripps (Director) and Elizabeth Witt (Choreographer) deserve special credit for crafting a production that feels both traditional and vibrant… What makes TWODS’ production truly special is its sincerity. Every performer on that stage seems to be there because they genuinely love the story they are telling. The result is infectious joy — the kind that leaves audiences humming as they exit the theatre, uplifted and inspired. In short, TWODS deliver a Sound of Music that is everything a community theatre production should be: polished, passionate, and profoundly moving. A triumph for all involved.” Paul Scott, Box Office Radio.

TWODS will be performing Evita at the Assembly Hall Theatre from 26 to 30 May 2026
